DANIEL G. STRAWSER, Sr., Traditional Folk Art Carver

Born and raised in south central Pennsylvania, I was inspired by carvings made by early wood carvers who used only a pocketknife to make their wares.  This led me to carve using the same method. My goal is to continue with the traditional procedure to show people what can be achieved using only a pocketknife. Since I buy my wood in random widths and lengths, I cut out an oversize silhouette of the object that I want to make with a band saw. The rest is done with only my pocketknife. After the carving is complete, a gesso sealer is applied on the wood to close the pores, much like the white wash used years ago. Afterwards, paint is applied. An antiquing process, to give it an old appearance, finishes my carvings. All my work is signed and dated for authenticity.

I have been carving since 1968. Some of my earlier carvings are now appearing at public auctions. They are bringing substantially higher prices than what they sold for originally. My work has appeared in many books and national magazines. It can also be found in prominent, private collections as well as in permanent collections in museums in the USA, Europe, and Japan.
